Ano raw meron?

"Ano raw meron?"

A common phrase used by someone who had just joined the conversation. "Ano raw meron?" in English translates to "what have we got?" or "what's it about?".

On the 25th of August, Saturday, a group of initial convenors hopes to gather the Filipino community in Cape Town to brief and put forward a plan to organise a social entrepreneurial initiative. The idea sprung from reactions for a final research project gathered by UCT masteral student Irina Velasco out of interviews from Filipinos currently living in Cape Town. A handful of respondents, inspired by their common dream and vision of not only unifying the otherwise fragmented community but also of creating a business endeavor. The five-member convening body made up of Boody Ramos, Mel Deslate, Mae Fe Ancheta-Templa, Sonia Vergara Chu and moderator Irina Velasco has been meeting regularly, exchanging ideas, planning and channeling positive energies towards the fulfillment of their communal goal.

In a letter addressed to the Filipino community, and officially endorsed by the Philippine Ambassador to South Africa, Hon. Ambassador Constancio Vingno, Jr., the convenors urged fellow Filipinos to join and participate in a consultative assembly and workshop in an effort to incite enthusiasm and generate interest towards an entrepreneurial development. The group chose to adapt and capitalize the traditional spirit of bayanihan (communal spirit of cooperation), a trait believed to be subconsciously ingrained in every Filipino but otherwise made latent due to modern socio-economic pressures.

In a letter addressed to the incumbent Honorary Consul, Mr Steven Chaimowitz and the leaders of the existing socio-cultural groups, Ambassador Vingno urged the individual leaders to encourage their respective members to participate in the initiative.

The workshop will be held at the St. Giles Centre, in Rondebosch, Cape Town. Members of the socio-cultural groups along with their respective partners and spouses are invited to attend. Youth participation is likewise encouraged as it is the convening group's belief that involvement should encompass everyone in the community; the youth being the pillars of the future. Community members are urged to help spread the news in whatever way they can including through the popular social media venues. A Facebook page has been created as a popular means of disseminating information along with this blog. Check out the latest posts and Like them on http://www.facebook.com/BayanihanSA.CPT.
